Extract Images vs PDF to Image: Which One Do You Need?

Choose between recovering embedded raster images from inside a PDF and rendering each complete PDF page as JPG, PNG or WebP.

Extract images from a PDF

Extract Images targets objects inside the page

Use Extract Images when you want photographs, figures or other supported raster images that are embedded inside the PDF.

The result is a set of PNG files representing the decoded raster objects the extractor can identify, rather than a picture of every PDF page.

PDF to Image renders the entire page

Use PDF to Image when you need each page exactly as it appears visually, including text, vector drawings, backgrounds, annotations that render visibly and embedded pictures.

That workflow converts the composed page into a JPG, PNG or WebP image. It is the right choice for page thumbnails, presentation slides, social sharing or archiving page appearance.

Why screenshots are a third, less precise workflow

A screenshot depends on the current display size and can include browser chrome, margins or a scaled page preview. It may also capture far fewer pixels than an embedded photograph contains.

If the goal is a photo from inside the PDF, extraction is usually more direct. If the goal is the complete page, page rendering is more reproducible than a manual screenshot.

Not every visible graphic is an extractable image

PDF pages can contain vector shapes, text and raster images together. Adobe documents raster images and vector objects as different kinds of page content.

If a logo or diagram is vector-based, Extract Images may not return it as a bitmap. Rendering the page with PDF to Image will still capture the visible vector artwork as part of the page image.

Choose based on what you want to reuse

Choose Extract Images for individual embedded raster assets. Choose PDF to Image for whole-page output.

If you are unsure, scan with Extract Images first. When no suitable bitmap is found, switch to PDF to Image for a rendered page copy.
