How to Convert a PDF to Grayscale for Printing

Turn a colour PDF into smooth grayscale locally, preserve tonal differences in photos and diagrams, and understand what changes in the output.

Convert PDF to grayscale

Grayscale keeps shades between black and white

Grayscale does not mean that every pixel becomes only black or white. It removes colour while retaining different brightness levels as shades of gray.

Adobe makes the same distinction: grayscale preserves tonal transitions and detail, while pure black-and-white uses only two tones.

Use grayscale for photos, diagrams and shaded documents

When a PDF contains photographs, gradients, shaded tables or colour-coded diagrams that still need tonal separation after colour is removed, Smooth Grayscale is usually the safer starting point.

The first-page preview lets you inspect the result before converting the whole document.

1into1 converts the rendered page, not the original vector colours

The tool renders each PDF page, converts every rendered pixel to a luminance-based gray value, and then writes the transformed page into a new PDF.

This makes the visible grayscale appearance permanent in the downloaded copy, but the result is image-based rather than a vector-preserving colour-space rewrite.

Selectable text does not survive the grayscale conversion

Because each page is rebuilt from a JPEG image, selectable text, OCR text layers, links and other interactive page structures are not preserved as normal PDF objects.

Keep the original PDF if you need search, copy-and-paste, editable forms or original vector content.

Check the final file before printing

Review several pages containing fine lines, light text, photographs and charts. Tonal detail can look different on paper than it does on a screen.

If you actually need a hard photocopy look with no gray tones, switch to Pure B&W rather than assuming grayscale and black-and-white are identical.
