How to Print a PDF as a Booklet: Double-Sided, Fold & Staple

Turn a normal PDF into saddle-stitch booklet spreads, understand why pages are reordered, and check duplex printing before folding and stapling.

Create a printable booklet

A booklet needs printer spreads, not normal page order

A standard PDF usually stores pages in reading order. A folded booklet has to place different page numbers beside each other on the physical sheet so that the pages return to normal order after double-sided printing and folding.

This rearrangement is called booklet imposition. The first and last pages share a sheet, and the remaining pages are paired around them according to the saddle-stitch sequence.

Choose the output sheet size before imposing

1into1 Booklet PDF can create A4 Landscape or US Letter Landscape printer spreads. Each output side contains two imposed document pages positioned for a center fold.

Use the paper format that matches the sheets you intend to print on, then generate the imposed PDF rather than resizing the document after imposition.

Why blank pages may be added

A folded saddle-stitch booklet uses four document pages per physical sheet: two on the front and two on the back. That means the imposed page count has to resolve into groups of four.

When the source PDF does not have a multiple-of-four page count, 1into1 pads the booklet with blank pages so the final folds can still produce the correct reading order.

Print double-sided and test the binding direction

Print the imposed PDF on both sides of the sheet and use the duplex or binding setting that keeps the back side upright after the sheet is folded. Printer terminology varies, so use a one-sheet test before printing the full job.

Adobe also recommends checking booklet subset and binding settings for duplex or manual two-pass booklet printing. A test print catches reversed backs or upside-down pages before paper is wasted.

Fold, staple and verify the finished booklet

After printing, keep the sheets in order, fold them through the center and staple along the fold for a simple saddle-stitched booklet.

Check the cover, center spread and final page before producing multiple copies. Paper thickness, printer margins and scaling can affect the physical result even when the page order is correct.
