Resize PDF: Fit to Page vs Center Original vs Stretch

Understand the three PDF resize placement modes: proportional fit, original-size centering, and full-page stretching, including their trade-offs.

Fit to Page scales proportionally

Fit uses the smaller of the horizontal and vertical scale ratios, so the complete source page fits inside the target page without changing its aspect ratio.

Because the proportions of formats such as A4 and Letter differ, proportional fit can leave margins on two sides. That is expected rather than a failed resize.

Center Original does not scale the content

Center Original places the source page at its existing width and height in the middle of the new target page.

When the target page is larger, this can add surrounding space. When the target is smaller, parts of the original can extend beyond the new page boundary and become clipped from view.

Fill Page stretches to both target dimensions

Fill Page sets the source width to the target width and the source height to the target height independently.

That removes the proportional-fit margins, but it can make circles oval, alter image proportions and change the apparent shape of text or diagrams.

Resize and crop solve different problems

Resizing creates a new target page size and places or scales the existing page content inside it. Cropping changes the visible page boundary around existing content.

If the goal is standard paper dimensions such as A4 or Letter, use Resize. If the goal is trimming excess margins or showing a smaller region of the existing page, use Crop.

Compare the output against the source

After resizing, inspect pages with edge-to-edge graphics, forms, barcodes or scale-sensitive drawings. Fit can add margins, Center can clip oversized pages, and Stretch can distort proportions.

Adobe’s print sizing guidance similarly separates Fit from Actual Size and other scaling choices because each option changes how content relates to the paper boundary.
